1 Day Shaker Broom Making Class June 7th 2025 9:00am-3:00pm
This year, we’re offering a one-day class dedicated to making a cobwebber broom and a turkey wing hand sweep. This will be on the first Saturday of the National Muzzleloading Association 10-day rifle class, which will be held at Hershel’s old homestead.
If you are attending the rifle class and have a spouse who would like to learn broom-making or you would like to stop by for the class, we would love to have you.
Cobweb brooms are beautiful, unusual, and very functional.
Made from whole broom corn “nurl”, cobwebbers allow you to reach up high or way down low to remove pesky cobwebs. Their narrow shape allows you to get into corners, along baseboards, and those other hard-to-reach places. If you have a cat, they are also great for getting to the things your playful feline hides under the fridge or behind furniture.
The Turkey wing sweep is a traditional style hand wisk that is equally functional and decorative. They have many uses around the house or hang it on the wall for everyone to admire
Tying brooms is not only a calming, full-body practice, but it also provides a great workout! You will use both feet to maintain tension and both hands to manipulate and tightly wrap the cordage. At the end of class, you will take home a stunning cobweb broom and turkey wing hand broom, along with the foundational skills to explore various broom making styles in the future.
Your instructor is Chad Henle, he’s studied broom making at Shaker Village Pleasant Hill and with artisans in Berea Kentucky.
All supplies and tools will be provided for this class, just bring yourself and a desire to learn. Limit 10 particiants for this class.
Please note that the deadline to register for this class is May 4th, 2025.
Cancelation Policy: If you cancel before May 9th, 2025 you will receive a full refund, after that date, we will not be issuing any refunds since we have instructors locked in, and it would be hard to fill the spot in the class after that.
Please note that the photos shown do not represent the exact broom you will make. These are made from naturl materials and as a result there will be variations.
